Itinerary : 5 Days From Casablanca to the Desert via Marrakech
Day 1: Casablanca – Cèdre Forest – Ziz Valley – Erg Chebbi Dunes
An unforgettable journey from Casablanca to the Sahara Desert, a day filled with diverse landscapes and cultural encounters. Departing early, you’ll traverse from the Atlantic Coast to the mesmerizing Erg Chebbi dunes near Algeria. Your first stop, Cèdre Gouraud Forest, offers a unique experience with wild Barbary macaques in a stunning cedar forest. Witness the 800-year-old Gouraud cedar, named after French General Henri Joseph Eugène Gouraud.
Continuing through the Atlas Mountains and the apple capital of Midelt, you’ll enter the enchanting Ziz Valley. As the landscape transforms from lush greenery to dry mountains, the proximity to the Sahara becomes evident. The Draa-Tafilalet region introduces you to the Draa River and the Ziz River, shaping the Tafilalt oasis near the dunes. Capture scenic moments in Ziz Valley and by the Al-Hassan Addakhil dam.
Approaching Erfoud, the final city before the dunes, you’re on the brink of Erg Chebbi, home to Morocco’s tallest dunes, with the highest reaching over 250 meters. Arriving at the dunes, settle into your hotel room, and, if timing allows, relish the magic of a Sahara Desert sunset. As the day concludes, immerse yourself in the local culture with live music and a delightful dinner, setting the stage for an extraordinary desert adventure.
Day 2: Erg Chebbi Dunes – Gorges du Todra – Ouarzazate
On the second day of your adventure, you have the option to wake up early and witness the captivating sunrise over the dunes, a magical experience to savor. For those preferring extra rest, a leisurely breakfast is served, and it’s time to prepare for the day’s journey. The ultimate destination is the captivating city of Ouarzazate.
Departing from the dunes, you’ll traverse the desert, passing through Rissani, where a quick exploration of its traditional central market awaits. The day’s route unfolds as a remarkable transition from the desert to the mountains. A highlight is the visit to the Todra Gorges, a breathtaking 300-meter high canyon with a narrow opening through which the road winds. Take your time to explore and capture memorable photos of this stunning natural wonder.
Continuing your journey, a stop at the remarkable Kasbah Amridil within the Skoura oasis adds cultural richness to your experience. The day concludes in Ouarzazate, often referred to as the “Door of the Desert.” Enjoy dinner at the hotel, and with a restful night’s sleep, you’ll be rejuvenated for the adventures that lie ahead on the following day of your tour.
Day 3: Ouarzazate – Ait Benhaddou – Marrakech
After a hearty breakfast, our exploration of Ouarzazate begins with a visit to the enchanting Taourirt Kasbah, a 17th-century palace constructed entirely from mud. You have the option to explore independently or hire an official guide to delve into the intricate details of this historic site. Don’t miss the elaborately decorated rooms and the stunning window views.
Our next stop is the Atlas Film Studios, an exciting destination that serves as an active film production hub. You might even have the chance to witness the shooting of a Hollywood production or spot renowned actors like Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt.
We then proceed to one of the most spectacular sites in southern Morocco – Ksar Ait Benhaddou. This fully mud-built village is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, showcasing the pre-Saharan clay building architecture. The structures date back to the 17th century, offering a captivating glimpse into the construction techniques of southern Morocco.
Leaving Ait Benhaddou behind, we embark on a journey across the High Atlas Mountains, reaching altitudes exceeding 2000 meters. The mountain crossing treats us to breathtaking views, especially during the winter months when the region may be covered in snow.
